Network for Good Celebrates Pride Month!

Throughout the month of June, we’re spotlighting how several nonprofits around the country are celebrating Pride Month through their work with LGBTQ+ communities. Read their stories below!

The Black Feminist Project

The Black Feminist Project enriches the lives of, restores agency, justice, joy, and health to Black Womxn, girls, and non-men, often referred to as marginalized genders or MaGes and the children they care for—with an emphasis on mother-led families.

Using dynamic and engaging food and reproductive justice programming that explores not only the intersections of race, class, gender, and respectability politics but also empowers them to tap into their inherent leadership abilities and dare to put themselves at the center of their own universes.

Here at BFP, we center the experiences and joy of Black Queer, Transgender, and Gender Non-Conforming/Binary Folx. Within the programs and events, we ensure that we are supporting and cultivating cultural humility for all the intersections that make up Black MaGes lived experiences as full human beings.

Casa Ruby

Casa Ruby is Washington DC’s only LGBTQ multicultural center. Casa Ruby provides social services and programs catering to the most vulnerable population,  Transgender Women and Immigrants of Color. The idea behind the formation of a Trans Women of Color run and led organization came almost 30 years ago when Ruby Corado arrived in DC, as a young asylum seeker from El Salvador  Her drive and dream was to bring resources to historically underserved and under resourced communities in order to create more success stories for transgender and queer folks.

The need at Casa Ruby grows daily, as more Trans people face violence and discrimination on a daily basis.

Pride Northwest

Best known for the annual Portland Pride Waterfront Festival and Parade, Pride Northwest is active year round. In addition to Pride, we support various grassroots LGBTQ+ organizations, build community with incarcerated LGBTQ+ youth, administer the George T. Nicola LGBTQ+ History Fellowship, and much more! This summer, we are excited to present Portland’s (and Oregon to our knowledge) very first LGBTQ+ public works art mural, “Never Look Away!” To support this project and find out more about Pride Northwest, visit our website here.

Casa BruMar

Casa BruMar Foundation’s mission is to build the first LGBTQ+ community center in Northern Virginia. It will also feature an emergency shelter for LGBTQ+ youth who become unsheltered or displaced due to non-accepting family. We also assist LBGTQ+ youth, ages 18-25, to achieve high school equivalency diplomas, GEDs, or attend trade schools.

About Face Theatre

About Face Theatre (AFT) exists to create exceptional, innovative, and adventurous theatre and educational programming that advances the national dialogue on sexual and gender identity, and challenges and entertains audiences in Chicago and beyond. We accomplish this through an annual Equity Mainstage Season, year-round Education Programs, and opportunities for new play development.

We envision AFT as a nationally recognized, intergenerational, and community-focused LGBTQIA arts organization by creating theatre that fosters awareness, understanding, and celebration of all forms of sexual and gender expression. By portraying the diverse and nuanced lives of LGBTQIA people positively and realistically, we hope to educate and empower audiences and incite social change in the push toward equal rights for all.

Additionally, our educational programming seeks to increase the safety, empowerment and leadership capacity of LGBTQIA youth, and to catalyze youth-led civic dialogue and action within schools and communities.

Casa Q

Casa Q is a non-profit in New Mexico serving lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ+) youth and allies (age 14 to 22) who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness. Unlike emergency shelter programs, Casa Q provides residential and transitional living services in a home-like environment, complemented with comprehensive and individual case management.

For many young people, entering the doors of Casa Q is the first time they will learn what a home really means. At Casa Q, our job is to plant seeds of hope and recovery for young LGBTQ+ people that cannot find this kind of support in any other environment. We don’t just provide in-and-out shelter service, we provide holistic, continued support to our youth to ensure they are nurtured in their healing journeys. Just like a seed that needs all the right elements to bloom, we depend on our community to help our youth to grow and blossom into their true selves.

Phoenix Lesbian and Gay Pride Committee Inc

The organization is a leader in the metro Phoenix LGBTQ+ community. During the past ten years, the organization has been able to make significant contributions to other LGBTQ+ focused non-profit organizations and has awarded scholarships to deserving LGBTQ+ individuals continuing their education. This year, the LGBTQ+ community will be celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the first LGBTQ+ march in Phoenix. Phoenix Pride will continue to honor and celebrate our community as we hit our 1 million-dollar give back to the community.

It is the goal of the organization to continue developing community programs to benefit the LGBTQ+ community and to continue to raise public awareness about the LGBTQ+ community in hopes to eliminate homophobia, transphobia and discrimination still very much prevalent over 40 years later.
